Choy Tung Shing is one the oldest remaining blacksmiths in Hong Kong – most famous for its handmade ovens used for Cantonese roasted pork and goose.īut there, too, the owner struggled with my request. “Choy Tung Shing may be your best chance.” “We all import our waffle irons from China these days,” said one shopkeeper. Filled with kitchenware shops, it’s a popular destination for those buying bubble waffle irons. I kicked off my quest with a visit to Shanghai Street in Kowloon. Called “gai daan jai” in Cantonese, their texture can be described as a cookie and sponge cake hybrid. You just can’t beat original. When I decided to write a story about the origins of Hong Kong bubble waffles – also known as “egg waffles” – I thought it would be easy.Ī seemingly unexceptional cheap street food found throughout the city, these snacks are crispy on the outside, while each “bubble” is fluffy on the inside. The flavoured bubble waffles were totally a miss. The noodle soups were good and they have a wide range of broths which is nice. Even though it looks weird, I really love it.Īnother popular option was the laksa soup base. I have a secret obsession for preserved egg. I quite liked the broth as it was pretty unique. The udon noodles was slightly thinner, but it was good. I went with the Preserved Egg Fish soup with udon, sliced beef brisket, fish tofu, fish puff, and more preserved egg. You can create your own bowl of noodles with any combination of soup base, noodles, and toppings. ![]() I thought it was a tad sweet for regular sweetness, so next time I would do half sweet. Deep fried chicken nuggets with salt and pepper is always a hit.įried Shrimp Ball was ok, but since it doesn’t have any sauce to go with it, I felt like something was missing. Inside you will find a little piece of octopus.Ĭhicken Nuggets was a good choice too. Delicious and you can’t go wrong with takoyaki. Takoyaki comes with 6 pieces and is topped with bonito flakes. ![]() It’s a deep fried tofu square topped with the fermented sauce. Stinky Tofu isn’t for everyone due to its smell. It was mostly the sauce that added the extra flavour. The texture was bouncy and lacked much flavour. It was ok, but I didn’t find anything special about it.įish Sui Mai has 6 pieces in an order. Taiwan Sausage comes with 2 pieces on skewers. It was just overpowering and people should just stick with the classic original bubble waffle. I found the matcha very very subtle, barely noticeable.Ĭinnamon Bubble Waffle wasn’t very good at all. ![]() Matcha Bubble Waffle had a nice crunchy exterior with pillowy soft bubbles. Either way, it’s still quite affordable.Ĭheesecake Bubble Waffle was ok, but it was a bit sweet. Most people come here to grab a bowl of noodles and some bubble tea.ĭue to their location, you’ll notice the prices are slightly higher than the other locations in the Lower Mainland. This location has a decent amount of seating. I was invited by ChineseBites to check out a few items on the menu. They serve popular street food snacks such as curry fish balls, egg waffles, stinky tofu, and fish soup noodles. Bubble Waffle Cafe has their newest location in Kerrisdale.
